Monitoring and Modeling Discussion

Tuesday, June 27th, 3 – 4:30 pm

Orleans Town Hall, Skaket Room

--Agenda—

1. Re-cap Meeting Objective: Develop a framework for coordinated, cost-effective modeling and monitoring to support town plans and regional watershed nutrient management analysis

2. Discuss need and timing for scenario model runs to support:

  • Ecological assessments (December SMAST tech memo)
  • Town plans and pilot projects
  • Next steps identified in Composite Analysis

3. Refine the scope, priorities and timeline for monitoring needed to support model runs:

  • Inventory of on-going or planned monitoring efforts
  • Determine which data sets would need to be updated in order to be able to run new modeling scenarios, as distinct from re-calibrating the model.
  • Explore discussion questions raised at February 2017 meeting:

1. Does the hydrodynamic model need to be updated and to what extent? Can sensitivity analysis be used to determine the value or necessity of this update?

2. Do sediment core samples need to be updated and to what extent? Can sensitivity analysis be used to determine the value or necessity of this update?

3. Do benthic samples need to be taken in all locations? Can sensitivity analysis be used to determine the value or necessity of this update?

4. Will DEP continue the eelgrass monitoring project and what is the timeline for the next update? (We are investigating this separately)

5. Can the land use and water use data be updated by the Cape Cod Commission, and what is the time frame of data we need from the four towns?

6. What is the recommended timeline for each data set that needs to be updated or collected?

7. With the updated data, what else is needed to re run the model?

8. What are the costs associated with each data collection effort and model run?

4. Next Step: outline and timeline of monitoring needs, and resources needed.
