MEETING MINUTES  

Monday, September 19, 2016   5:00 p.m.   Albro House, Harwich

 

In attendance:  Sheila House, Barbara Segal, Julia Eldredge, Brooke Canada, Sharon Stover Gleason

 

  • Meeting called to order at 5:11 p.m.
  • Approved minutes of the June meeting
  • Youth Counselors Report – Caseload currently at 12 full-time in anticipation of 9 day vacation. All clients covered for vacation time. New clients were referred to outside agencies.
    • Chris Herren from the Herren Foundation is speaking at the high school on October 3rd with follow-up discussion sessions in classes following.
    • Sheila will be working with Pete Patel from Harwich Police to get Monomoy youth involved in prevention efforts, as well as creating a bridge between public safety officials and students.
    • The Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey will be administered on Wednesday November 2nd during enrichment block, to grades 7-12.
  • Pilgrim Church Youth Space idea. Discussion of drop-in space vs. enrichment programs for grades 6 and 7. Brooke and Julia will research cost of programs at Chatham Rec, Harwich Rec and Brooks Library. Sheila will talk to Mark Wilson at the middle school about the distribution of a take-home flyer to parents, asking them about interest in drop-in space or enrichment classes.
  • 9th graders who were part of last year’s 8th grade fundraiser dance would be interested in working with HYS Committee in doing dance fundraisers, including hosting dances for 8th graders. Sheila will invite any of them that can come to attend our next meeting.
  • Harwich Youth Services supports the idea of hosting a screening of the film Screenagers, which is geared toward parents who are concerned/frustrated/confused about how technology and mobile devices affect their kids. Lots of good information about phones, tablets and the internet. Tentatively scheduled for January.
  • There will be a Parent Summit for Prevention November 20th at Cape Codder Resort. More information to follow at our October meeting.
