MEETING MINUTES  

Monday, January 23, 2017   5:00 p.m.   Albro House, Harwich

Followed by annual report to the Board of Selectmen

In attendance:  Sheila House, Julia Eldredge, Brooke Canada, Barbara Segal

• Meeting called to order at 5:22 p.m.
• Approved minutes of the November meeting. Barbara moved, Julia seconded.
• Youth Counselors Report- Sheila was asked to be part of a group that is drafting the new updated policies for SEL (Social Emotional Learning) with school administrators, teachers, and community counselors. She will keep HYS informed as meetings progress. Her caseload is full and includes students who are taking the Healthy Choices class.
•  Upcoming events that HYS is collaborating on/promoting:

1. Wednesday, March 22^nd-A showing of the film SCREENAGERS: Teens & the Digital Age at Monomoy High School. License to show the film has been covered by the Art of Charity (through our co-host Sharon Stark from Chatham Recreation), and the Harwich and Chatham elementary school PTO’s who will also help promote the event. The event hosts are Harwich Youth Services Committee and Chatham Recreation. Sheila will work up a letter to Stop & Shop and Shaw’s for Julia E. to get food donations.
2. TBA April- Sheila had discussions with Harwich Police Chief and the Regional Substance Abuse Council about hosting a town hall meeting about legalization and possible effects on youth (and other populations). Sheila will be exploring this at the RSAC meeting on February 2^nd.
3. MISSRPERESENTATION screening- sometime this fall with co-sponsor WE CAN, a women’s advocacy non-profit. This film explores media stereotypes and representations of women in culture. Date TBA in September or October.
4. SPEAKER EVENT – With Dr. Ruth Potee, for parents, discussing risk factors for addiction and youth. TBA October. Co-sponsor, Lower Cape Prevention Partnership.
5. ELECTIONS – Julia Eldredge nominated by Brooke Canada as chair, 2^nd from Barbara Segal. Barbara Segal nominated by Julia Eldredge as co-chair, 2^nd from Brooke Canada. Julia Eldredge nominated Jim Hartley as clerk, 2^nd from Brooke Canada.
6. Sheila and Brooke will meet next week to talk about categories for Junior Ed classes at Pilgrim Church.
7. Meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m.

Next meeting is Monday, February 20^th at 5:00 p.m.  Albro House
