Explore the Wonder of Birds with Peter Trull
Build your Knowledge and Confidence With Every Bird You See

Lesson 1. Bird Structure, Adaptations, and Habitats
Saturday, December 7, 2019

(9:00-11:00 a.m.)
You see a bird on the water, but is it a loon, a grebe, or a duck? How do you tell the difference? Learn how birds are classified through photographs and class discussion led by Peter Trull. Also discuss and learn about the diversity of local habitats and how birds use them. Discover what birds you might find and where including the sea to the beaches, to woodlands and marshes and ponds.

Lesson 2. Bird Field Marks
Saturday, December 14, 2019

(9:00 – 11:00 a.m., plus one-hour field walk)
In this birding identification lesson with Peter Trull, discover which field marks to look for in different families of birds. Streaked breast or plain breast? Wing bars or no wing bars? Leg color? Yes, leg color. Does the bird have a distinctive crown or eye stripe? How are males and females different in plumage and other identifying characteristics? Learn through Peter’s selected slides with plenty of time for note-taking.

After class, Peter will lead a field trip to HCT’s Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve in Harwich Port to practice identifying birds.
