Joint Statement from the Harwich Police and Harwich Fire Departments regarding fireworks and the upcoming July 4th Holiday

Police Chief David Guillemette and Fire Chief David LeBlanc would like to take this opportunity to remind those living and visiting Harwich that Massachusetts General Law Chapter 148, Section 39 prohibits private citizens from using, possessing or selling fireworks.

Illegal firework use has caused serious injuries and also serious fires throughout the nation and state.

This year, especially with the drought the State is in, the risk of fires from fireworks is even greater. In addition to fires and injuries, fireworks can be disruptive to other residents, military veterans, and pets. Please be considerate of your neighbors and abide by the state law regarding fireworks.

The Harwich Police and Fire Departments will respond to any reports of illegal fireworks.

However this weekend also represents a very busy time for both departments and response to these calls may be delayed as other more serious incidents take precedence. Both Chiefs wish the residents and visitors of Harwich a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.
