Historic District & Historical Commission

The proposed construction, demolition or alteration of buildings and structures in the Harwich Center Historic District require review and approval by the Historic District Commission, prior to the commencement of any and all work or filing of a building permit application.  Applications are available here (Application and Certificate Form) and are submitted  through the Building Department.  Refer generally to the Town Code, Chapter 131, Article I and MGL Chapter 40C.

In addition, the proposed full or partial demolition of any building in the town 100 years or older requires the filing of a Notice of Intent for review by the Historical Commission, submitted through the Building Department, prior to the commencement of any building demolition work or filing of a building permit application.  If the Commission determines that the building in question is historically significant and demolition will threaten its significance, then the Commission can impose a delay on demolition for up to one year during which time the Commission may discuss and investigate alternatives to demolition with the applicant.   Refer generally to the Town Code, Chapter 131, Article II.

See the 'Resources' link listed on this page for applications, lists, maps and more.
