MEETING MINUTES  

Monday, October 17, 2016   5:00 p.m.   Albro House, Harwich

 

In attendance:  Sheila House, Barbara Segal, Julia Eldredge, Brooke Canada, Jim Hartley

 

  • Meeting called to order at 5:10 p.m.
  • Approved minutes of the September meeting. Barbara S. moved, Brooke seconded.
  • Youth Counselors Report
  • HYSC looking for 2 new members. Sheila will advertise on Channel 18 and CC Chronicle. Also Angie Chilaka.  Brooke will contact the PTO at Harwich Elementary School. Julia will check with Mark Wilson at Monomoy Middle School to see if there are places to put a notice in the school or via newsletter.
  • Brooke looked into after school programs to identify gaps in services/programs.
    • Harwich Recreation has sports-related activities and serves mostly children up to age 10 or 11. The community center closes at 5:00 pm Saturdays
    • Chatham Recreation has the most comprehensive program for youth through middle school years, after school, $6 per day and scholarships for kids who can’t afford fees
    • Brooks Library has an activity for tweens Monday-Thursday after school which is usually self-run by kids (i.e. Legos, Middle School Makers)

Brooke will be getting a tour of the Chatham Rec in the next week with Sharon Stark

  • Discussion on possible “Junior Ed” programs for kids like cooking classes, making kites, arts & crafts, etc. that would run 6 weeks for middle school kids. Possible locations: Albro House, Pilgrim Church, Harwich Community Center. Also discussed raising funds through Friends of Harwich Youth, who could purchase supplies and pay instructors
  • SCREENAGERS-The Movie. A 70-minute film with panel discussion which focuses on kids and media interface (cell phones, tablets, computers) Get business sponsors. Refreshments and childcare. Possible dates: January 5th or 12th (Thursdays) Sheila will be meeting with Sharon Stark, our partner in this endeavor. Fiona Jensen from Calmer Choice is also interested.
  • Meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.

 

Next meeting is Monday, November 21st at 5:45 p.m.  Albro House
