South Harwich Cemetery

HISTORY OF BURIAL GROUND

The South Harwich Methodist Church is the second oldest Methodist Church on Cape Cod. It was built in 1836. The land for the church and the cemetery was deeded by John Paine Eldredge. The "cattle guard" still blocking the church walk today was erected many years ago to prevent interruptions of sermons by cows and horses which were inclined to follow their owners to the meeting-house and get into the graveyard.
